New York is for car lovers?
Well, not quite. But, the New York City long range plan has some pretty interesting data in it that shows transit may not be all its cracked up to be. The technical report to the transportation chapter reveals that 34% of all trips are by walking, 33% of all trips are by automobile (36% if you include taxi), and just 30% are by transit (bus, rail, and ferry). Morever, the city expects to add 900,000 people by 2030. Automobile traffic is expected to increase by 10% and freight truck traffic by a whopping 64%!
Even New York, home to one third of all the nation's transit users, still needs to pay attention to roads.
