20 years in the “making”
No wonder capacity expansions almost never keep up with increases in driving.
Twenty years later and this highway project isn’t open for motorists; it’s still a year away from simply breaking ground:
- Federal, state and local officials formally marked the beginning of the design and construction phase for the $270 million Lincoln Bypass in a Wednesday morning ceremony.
The 11.7-mile thoroughfare, which will allow traffic on Highway 65 to bypass downtown Lincoln, has been 20 years in the making. It will begin at Industrial Boulevard and link back to Highway 65 near Sheridan.
During the ceremony, Rep. John Doolittle, R-Roseville, along with Lincoln Mayor Ray Sprague and Celia McAdam, executive director of the Placer County Transportation Planning Agency, signed a letter transferring final environmental clearances to the California Transportation Commission.
Officials also requested approval of a right of way so construction of the long-awaited project can begin next year.
