Happy Neatkaribas deklaracijas pasludinasanas diena

For those of you who haven't been keeping up on your Latvian, that translates roughly as [Happy] Independence Day from the Soviet Union (1990) (though technically, the Latvian Independence Day most like our 4th of July is in November)

Not too familiar with many Latvians? They're part of the eastern European flat tax revolution and leaders in privatization efforts in such sectors as social security and shipping. Oh yes, and let's not forget that Latvia was the first central or eastern European nation to elect a female president.

Jealous? You should be; with a flat tax, privatization and claim to the monoplane and Mark Rothko, who wouldn’t want to live in Daugavpils
