Wal-Mart or Food stamps: What’s the principled stand?
Jack Powell is a singer-guitarist for the Zucchini Brothers. Three days a week he works as a substitute teaching assistant. That gig gets him about $70 per day and sometimes he works at funeral homes to make extra money.
He’s always lived a frugal life and that has long meant stretching dollars at Wal-Mart. That changed after a colleague exposed him to the many “evils” of the biggest box:
- "I don't like what Wal-Mart stands for," Powell said, noting the mega-chain's scanty health insurance for staffers.
- He and his partner agreed to go on food stamps for their family rather than shop at Wal-Mart any longer.
