Looking into the faces of outsourced workers

U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow and Michigan Democratic Party Executive Chairman Mark Brewer helped kick off the opening session Monday of the Democratic National Convention.

"On January 20, 2005, we will establish two important new priorities," stopping the outsourcing of jobs and improving health care, Stabenow told the convention after giving the DNC Credentials Committee report.

Here is why protectionism will always work at conventions. Outsourcing’s benefactors rarely know who they are, but its victims are plain to see:

"When I look into the faces of Michigan workers whose last assignment before losing their jobs was to train their foreign replacements, it renews my commitment to work for new leadership in America ..."

Private businesses can reserve the right to refuse service to anyone. Highways are a common area, which makes it tougher to keep out the riff raff. The solution to all this will probably include some way to make costly people pay their own way (perhaps some form of restitution). Finding a policy that works and is politically feasible is always the trick
